286 U.S.-registered mobile apps are likely violating COPPA, endangering up to 18 million children’s privacy. Operators of mobile apps directed to children in the United States (U.S.) must comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) if they engage in the collection, use, or disclosure of children’s personal information online; despite globally increasing concerns about online child safety, Pixalate’s latest research discovers that numerous ad-enabled mobile apps on the Google Play and Apple App Stores appear to be child-directed yet fail to comply with the COPPA Rule.

Hundreds of mobile apps may be illegally sharing kids’ data. Recently, AdTechRadar spotlighted Pixalate’s Q1 2025 State of Children’s Privacy on Mobile Apps report, which revealed 286 U.S.-registered mobile apps likely in violation of COPPA.
